First, the obvious: I liked that book. I liked that enough to write a review and not only a rating.The book is a continuation of Valley of Shadows and is set in John Ringo’s Black Tide Universe.I have tried to be spoiler-free in this review but the spoiler-free warning only concerns River of Night. I am writing under the assumption that previous books in the series are already known.That being said, the book begins where Valley of Shadows ended. Tom Smith has made it out of NYC with a small crew made of long-time allies, short-time allies of yet unproven loyalty and, well, refugees. Their goal: to reach one of the safeholds Tom had had develop in his role as head of security at Bank of the Americas…. If it were that simple.The story is masterfully told from multiple points of view and has, for the long-time reader, the added advantage of reusing minor characters who appeared in the first book of the series (Under a Graveyard Sky) (if you feel compelled to do a reread of the whole series at this point, do so! 😊). There are also new, original characters, with their own quirks and personality.Compared to the John Ringo original Tetralogy and even to Valley of Shadows, the book is more about land action than sea action and it changes the problems faced by the protagonists significantly. In particular, travelling becomes an ordeal, as motors make noise, but staying put in a non-prepared area is also an ordeal as you are bound to starve or to get insane, trying to be silent to avoid becoming zombie food.Tom Smith will have quite a journey before being able to reach a safe spot, and even then…As with any collaboration it is difficult to determine where Ringo begins and Massa ends and I shan’t try to guess. One thing stood out nonetheless: when John Ringo writes action scenes, they are good, tense, sometimes epic and if you like action scenes, you like them more or less instantly. When you read action scenes written by Mike Massa, well, they are different and – for my taste – in some ways better. They perhaps lack a bit of the tension a seasoned writer like John Ringo is able to bring due to his experience, but they have authenticity, they have believability. Considering Mike Massa’s military background, it isn’t something surprising but it is something utterly enjoyable.In more psychological themes, the book also delves with the human psyche, how each of us copes with disaster, gives up or stands up again, looks for redemption or sinks to utter depravity. Classical themes but well handled (with the minor caveat of the romantic interest couple which sometimes felt a bit off, but nothing major.)I shall be honest, I bought Valley of Shadows and River of Night because I thoroughly enjoyed the BTR universe, I am now looking forward to new books by Mike Massa, collaboration or not, as I see in him the potential to become a great writer. Right now, he is already a good one! (if you don’t believe me, check out his short stories in the Noir Fatale anthology and in the Lost Signals of the Terran Republic anthology).To sum it up, buy the book, read it, enjoy it, put Mike Massa and John Ringo on the list of authors you follow!And for the record: I read the eARC monthes ago. Today is the first day I am allowed to comment about it. :)
