Stephen Hawking held the post of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Cambridge, the chair held by Isaac Newton in 1663, for thirty years. Professor Hawking is now Director of Research for the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge. He has over a dozen honorary degrees, and was awarded the Companion of Honour in 1989. He is a fellow of the Royal Society and a Member of the US National Academy of Science. His books include the bestselling Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays, The Universe in a Nutshell, and A Briefer History of Time. His most recent book, The Grand Design, was a Sunday Times bestseller. Stephen Hawking is regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Einstein. He lives in Cambridge.

Reading this book reminds me (if I needed reminding) why I am not a physicist. Although, for the most part it's not too difficult to follow, it's worth taking the time to look up some of the physics terms to get a little more understanding of their meaning. I had hoped (more wishful thinking than anything else) for a real 'aha' moment and although it didn't occur I enjoyed the book.

The book is written in the way that people without much knockledge about physics can still understand well. I learn a lot from here. Very interesting. Highly recommended.

Es erklärt auf einfache Weise, durch verschiedene Analogien, wie genau das Universum funktioniert. Dabei geht es auf die kleinsten Elementarteilchen (die verschiedenen Quarks) ein, ohne zu verwirrend zu werden. Es gibt einen sehr guten Einblick auf die Funktionsweise des Universums, erklärt diese doch nicht auf einem tieferem level. Doch da dieses Buch nur als Einleitung benutzt werden soll, erfüllt es seinen Zweck sehr gut.

Great book. It's not for average person who may not be much into cosmology and physics. You also have to be a bit into knowing who is who in cosmology to follow Hawking with his arguments putting them into some chronology of opinions about BH etc.

Must read. Content quite challenging being the subject here theoretical physic. However well written, when possible even funny. And most of all, you get a grasp of what we think is out there - and I stress we think!!

I believe it was just Stephen Hawking's name that made me buy this book. His reputation somehow ensures the quality up front. Further than just explaining the origin of the universe it provides an interesting relation between astronomy, relativity and quantum mechanics, i.e. between the enormously big and the very smallest in physics. It is Hawking's goal to explain physics to everyman and he succeeds to a high degree. There are, in fact, matter which is complex and difficult to understand if you are not in that science. On the other hand, in my opinion there are things, which he over explains, making it too popular. However, this does not influence the overall quality and I highly recommend this book.
